Shinrin Shintai – Moving In Nature

And so it continues. Sitting is the new smoking, unless it’s for meditation in which case it’s the new Prozac. Running fast? Well that’s just crazy and therefore “jogging” is the way to go, but apparently steady state cardio is just plain bad for you… If you run faster than 7 miles per hour you can self combust. Unless you are sprinting, in which case you can get fit in 4 minutes.

Lack of exercise is as bad as smoking. Exercise won’t counteract sitting. Sitting and smoking might just be the way to go, whilst drinking a bottle of red wine a day as that’s apparently as effective as exercising.

For every problem a solution, for every solution, another problem. We need to stop the madness.

Here’s the simple facts. We are surrounded by unbalanced forces, working to slow us down. We’d rather be fed, watered, rested and warm than hungry, thirsty, tired and cold. An object in motion can only stay in motion when we refuse to settle, but settling is what we are hardwired to do. We need to unplug from the noise and static and re-connect with ourselves and all our senses.

The simple joy of moving, the pleasure of sweating in the heat, running in the cold, walking in the woods, lifting things, putting them down, breathing in the mist at the edge of the shore, paddle-boarding on a fast flowing river, slack lining barefoot, sitting in silence, a sun salutation under the stars, listening intently, feeling the very earth beneath your feet, testing your mettle, leaning in to our discomfort and pushing at the edges of our experience. These things have nothing to do with academics sitting in buildings making charts and graphs and presenting their findings and everything to do with personal experience.

Joseph Campbell said it so eloquently in The Power of Myth

People say that what we’re all seeking is a meaning for life. I don’t think that’s what we’re really seeking. I think that what we’re seeking is an experience of being alive, so that our life experiences on the purely physical plane will have resonances with our own innermost being and reality, so that we actually feel the rapture of being alive.”

An Earth Strength retreat is all about experience. I hope you can join us.
